A well-known chain beverage store has once again been found to have excessive pesticide residues. The Taipei City Health Bureau conducted inspections of commercially available tea leaves and herbal teas, discovering that the high mountain green tea sold by Ching Shin Fu Chuan’s Zhongzheng branch and the lavender tea from Rose House Tea Shop exceeded safety standards by eight to ten times. Prolonged accumulation of these pesticide residues in the body can cause severe damage to the liver and kidneys.
Many people enjoy brewing and drinking dark green high mountain tea with its rich aroma. But who would dare to drink it if the tea leaves contain excessive levels of fungicides? The Taipei City Health Bureau found that the high mountain green tea sold by Ching Shin Fu Chuan’s Zhongzheng branch on Wenlin Road in Shilin contained the fungicide fipronil at levels eight times the standard limit. Meanwhile, the lavender tea sold by Rose House Tea Shop on Section 3 of Nanjing East Road was found to contain fipronil at ten times the standard limit.
Fipronil is a neurotoxin, and long-term accumulation in the body can harm the liver and kidneys. A visit to the Ching Shin Fu Chuan branch in Shilin revealed that the high mountain green tea was still being sold. The store explained that this was a different batch of tea leaves and provided inspection certificates claiming they were safe and compliant. However, compliance is not determined by the store itself. The Health Bureau has ordered the problematic tea leaves to be removed from shelves, is continuing to investigate the upstream suppliers, and will impose fines ranging from NT$60,000 to NT$6 million.
