The Consumers' Foundation today announced the results of testing 20 samples of commercially available dried herbal (flower and fruit) teas, revealing that 8 samples contained excessive pesticide residues. The foundation urged consumers to purchase clearly labeled herbal teas.

The Consumers' Foundation noted that in July, dried herbal teas were purchased from various sources in Taipei and New Taipei, including herbal medicine shops, food stores, traditional markets, supermarkets, lifestyle stores, and online platforms. The samples included nine chrysanthemum teas, three rose teas, three lavender teas, two chamomile teas, and three mixed flower-and-fruit teas, totaling 20 samples tested for pesticide residues.

Test results showed that 10 samples had no detectable pesticide residues, while one "chamomile" sample contained pesticide residues within safe limits. However, all nine chrysanthemum tea samples tested positive for pesticide residues, with only one "yellow chrysanthemum" sample meeting safety standards. The remaining eight chrysanthemum samples exceeded permissible pesticide levels.

The Consumers' Foundation listed the non-compliant herbal teas and the excessive pesticides detected:
- One "tribute chrysanthemum" sample contained excessive cypermethrin.
- One "white chrysanthemum" sample contained carbendazim.
- One "chrysanthemum" sample contained chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin.
- One "chrysanthemum" sample contained carbendazim, dimethomorph, and flutriafol.
- Another "chrysanthemum" sample contained carbendazim, dimethomorph, flutriafol, triazophos, and prochloraz.
- One "flower tea series—Hangzhou chrysanthemum" sample contained carbendazim, dimethomorph, cypermethrin, propargite, and tetrachloroisophthalonitrile.
- One "chrysanthemum" sample contained dimethomorph, propargite, tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, difenoconazole, cyhalothrin, and chlorfenapyr.
- Another "chrysanthemum" sample contained carbendazim, dimethomorph, cypermethrin, tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, ethoprophos, difenoconazole, and prochloraz.

The Consumers' Foundation emphasized that violators could face fines ranging from NT$60,000 to NT$6 million under Article 31 of the Food Sanitation Management Act. In severe cases, businesses may be ordered to suspend operations, cease business for a specified period, or have their company, commercial, or factory registrations revoked.

In addition to advocating for traceable production and sales records, the foundation reminded consumers to always purchase clearly labeled herbal teas and avoid products of unknown origin. (1011006)
