Scientists at the neuropsychology laboratory of the psychology department at the National Autonomous University of Mexico are conducting a research project aimed at preventing and alleviating memory loss. Recently, the university released a bulletin detailing the findings of this research project.
The project, led by researcher Selene Cancino, is titled "The Impact of Quality of Life on Individual Memory Development." Previous isolated experiments have confirmed that factors influencing memory loss include nutrition, physical and neurological exercise, levels of glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides in the blood, confidence in one's memory and recall abilities, stress levels, and social life experiences.
The study involved 1,500 participants, categorized by their birth decades, and evaluated all the aforementioned factors in a single experiment. "Through multivariate analysis, we aim to determine the extent to which nutritional status, exercise, and other factors contribute to memory loss." The research identified two types of memory: working memory and auxiliary memory. Working memory refers to the ability to grasp and process information, forming conclusions in the mind, which is essential for understanding and problem-solving. The second type involves remembering personal experiences and environments, such as the location, time, and context of events. Both types of memory significantly decline with age. The study suggests that no one can avoid some degree of memory loss.
After analyzing the overall data trends, the researchers' preliminary conclusions indicate that memory decline may begin as early as age 20, after the nervous system has fully matured. In contrast, previous isolated experiments found that "memory decline does not start at 50 to 55 years old, but rather at 30 years old."
