Many arthritis patients need to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain, but they are also concerned that these medications may harm the stomach and cause ulcers, so they often take antacids to protect their stomachs. However, Canadian researchers recently discovered that combining antacids with anti-inflammatory drugs may severely damage the small intestine.
A study published by the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute at McMaster University in Canada pointed out that NSAIDs are already prone to causing damage to the small intestine. If patients also take acid-suppressing drugs such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), the damage to the small intestine can become even more severe.
The study has been published in the medical journal *Gastroenterology*. Lead researcher Professor John Wallace stated that it was previously difficult to detect whether drugs were harming the small intestine. Only recently, with the use of pill-sized cameras, have researchers been able to truly explore the effects of medications on the small intestine.
Professor Wallace explained that suppressing stomach acid secretion can indeed effectively protect the stomach from NSAID damage, but these drugs appear to shift the harm from the stomach to the small intestine. Once ulcers develop in the small intestine, they are often more dangerous and harder to treat.
Professor Wallace added that the medical community is currently researching methods to treat small intestine damage, such as the use of probiotics, which may help repair the damage. However, these approaches are still in the experimental stage.
