A sixth-grade elementary school student in Taoyuan City found it difficult to see the words written on the blackboard by the teacher at the start of the new semester. Initially suspected by their parents to be due to "worsening myopia," the child was later diagnosed by a doctor as having "pseudomyopia" caused by taking cold medicine.
The parents of the sixth-grader originally thought their child’s vision had deteriorated due to excessive internet use and TV watching during the summer vacation. However, after an examination at Li Xin Hospital in Taoyuan City, the ophthalmologist discovered it was actually a "misunderstanding by the parents."
Zhang Wenrui, director of the ophthalmology department at Li Xin Hospital, explained today that under normal circumstances, when the eyes focus on an object, the ciliary muscles automatically contract to adjust the focal length, allowing the image to be clearly projected onto the retina. Prolonged close-up eye use can overwork the ciliary muscles, causing spasms and making it difficult for the eyes to focus on distant objects—this is known as "pseudomyopia."
Zhang Wenrui stated that certain medications containing specific antihistamines or cholinergic components can interfere with the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, causing the ciliary muscles to lose their ability to adjust and resulting in blurred vision. The sixth-grader experienced vision changes after taking cold medicine, but their vision gradually recovered after stopping the medication.
Zhang Wenrui noted that if students have difficulty seeing clearly in class after the start of the school year, it may not always be due to eye strain—it could also be pseudomyopia induced by medication. Parents should avoid immediately scolding their children or rushing to get new glasses.
Additionally, the doctor mentioned that after the age of 20, the eye axis typically stops growing, and myopia progression becomes unlikely. If an adult experiences worsening myopia, it could be due to other factors such as diabetes, high blood sugar, changes in lens refraction, or cataracts. In such cases, prompt medical examination is essential.
