Many people love running, but those with aortic dissection need to be cautious! Mr. Zhang, 50, developed a habit of running 3,000 meters daily since his twenties and maintained it for decades without interruption. Despite having a history of hypertension, one day while running, he experienced chest tightness, cold sweats, and heart pain. After emergency medical attention, he was diagnosed with Type A aortic dissection. Fortunately, he underwent emergency ascending aortic repair and replacement surgery and is now gradually recovering.

Despite running daily, the burly Mr. Zhang suddenly collapsed, leaving him shaken. In addition to his hypertension, he never underwent regular health check-ups and often overate due to stress, leading to an unhealthy lifestyle that had long compromised his health.

When Mr. Zhang was rushed to the hospital, Dr. Cao Naiwen, Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at Taipei Medical University Hospital, performed an ascending aortic repair and replacement surgery. Two months post-surgery, he regained his passion for running. However, during one run, he felt weakness in his left leg after just 400 meters and had to seek medical attention again. Doctors then performed Taiwan’s first-ever endovascular aortic fenestration procedure, helping him restore his original stamina.

Aortic dissection occurs when high blood pressure causes a tear in the blood vessel, allowing high-pressure blood to flow through the tear and split the normal vessel into two layers. Rough estimates suggest that in Taiwan, 3 out of every 200,000 people suffer from this condition annually, with about 50% of patients dying within 48 hours of onset.
