A recent study in the United States shows that breastfeeding can suppress specific genes, making infants and young children less susceptible to ear infections, thereby reducing the likelihood of ear diseases.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Los Angeles, December 11, researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston collected genetic samples from 505 children in Texas and Kentucky, 60% of whom were classified as prone to otitis media. The researchers analyzed minor differences in three genes related to inflammation in these children.
The study indicates that two of these genes are associated with the risk of ear diseases. They can produce tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) proteins, which weaken the immune system's resistance, leading to ear diseases. However, if breastfeeding is adopted, the effects of these two genes are diminished, and the immune system's resistance is correspondingly enhanced.
The related research report is published in the latest issue of the monthly "Journal of Pediatrics."
