Breast cancer ranks first among cancers affecting women in Taiwan, with a noticeable trend of affecting younger women in recent years. The incidence rate among women under 35 in Taiwan is 4% higher than in European countries, with approximately 400 young patients diagnosed annually. Doctors advise that women should perform self-examinations after menstruation and seek ultrasound or X-ray examinations if any lumps are detected. If detected early, the cure rate for breast cancer can be as high as 90%.

Ms. Kang, aged 28, has a family history of cancer and is concerned about genetic predisposition, so she performs monthly breast self-examinations. Breast self-examination is crucial, as statistics from the Taiwan Breast Cancer Society indicate a trend of younger women being diagnosed with breast cancer, with patients under 35 years old.

In Europe, the rate is 2%, but in Taiwan, it is as high as 6%. Based on an average of 7,000 patients annually in Taiwan, 420 of them are under 35 years old, with the youngest patient being only 17 years old. The trend of younger breast cancer patients may be due to the Westernization of diets in Taiwan, with increased consumption of high-calorie fried foods and changes in lifestyle.

The society notes that women over 50 in Taiwan are eligible for free annual breast examinations, but younger women often neglect this due to the lack of free screening services. By the time a lump is detected, the tumor is often already large. Clinically, it has been observed that breast cancer in younger patients tends to be more aggressive with a poorer prognosis. Therefore, it is crucial for young women to perform self-examinations after menstruation and to undergo ultrasound and X-ray examinations immediately if any issues are found. Early detection can lead to a cure rate as high as 90%.
