[China Times Health - Lin Zhiyuan / Taipei Report]

Modern people are experiencing hair loss at a younger age due to stress, dietary habits, and external environmental factors. According to statistics from the Department of Health, Executive Yuan, 15.7% of Taiwanese men aged 25 to 65 suffer from male pattern baldness, reflecting this trend.

Although baldness does not affect health, for many men, it is a fatal flaw in romantic relationships. Unlike other parts of the body, hair cannot be easily concealed, and the amount of hair on one's head is immediately visible. Baldness is often associated with middle-aged and elderly individuals, seemingly a characteristic of men over 50. This has caused significant frustration in interpersonal and romantic relationships for those with thinning hair, leading to considerable psychological distress.

Hair transplant expert Zhang Zongzhe explains that the causes of male pattern baldness are primarily genetic, related to male hormones, and age. The pattern of male pattern baldness is unique; due to varying sensitivity of hair follicles to male hormones, hair loss is mostly confined to the forehead, crown, and upper back of the head. Excessive secretion of male hormones combines with 5a-reductase in the cytoplasm of human hair follicle cells, producing a large amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) metabolite toxins, leading to the degeneration, atrophy, and death of hair follicles, resulting in hair loss.

To address baldness, aside from taking medication, applying hair growth solutions, or wearing wigs, the most direct solution is hair transplantation. Dr. Li Chongxiong states that high-density hair transplantation techniques are currently used. This method involves using magnification devices to extract a strip of scalp from the back of the head, separating the scalp into individual follicular units under a microscope, and implanting these units into pre-made tiny holes in the targeted areas. These implantation holes are meticulously designed to lower the hairline and fill in bald or thinning areas. Medical research has found that these normal hair follicles retain their original characteristics even after being transplanted to bald areas, allowing hair to grow naturally without being affected.

Zhang Zongzhe notes that the purpose of hair transplantation varies across different cultures. In Japan, where senior executives frequently attend meetings, give speeches, and take commemorative photos, a significant proportion of hair transplants are done for image enhancement. In Taiwan, the primary age group for hair transplantation is unmarried office workers aged 25 to 35, with the main goal being to increase opportunities for romantic relationships.

Doctors explain that the average adult male has about 100,000 hair strands, and this number only decreases with age. Hair transplantation cannot increase the total number of hair strands but can redistribute them, albeit within certain limits. Therefore, if experiencing hair loss, it is crucial to consult a professional doctor to understand the true cause of hair loss before seeking appropriate treatment or undergoing hair transplantation. It is important not to believe in unverified hair growth remedies, as they may accelerate hair loss, leading to regret.
