American researchers today pointed out that smokers with chronic lung disease are more likely to have a poorly functioning antioxidant defense system compared to smokers without these diseases.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide, and its ranking is trending upwards.

Researchers found that in smokers with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, the master gene known as NRF2 does not function properly. The NRF2 master gene is responsible for activating other genes involved in protecting the lungs, thereby safeguarding them from pollution and tobacco damage. There are approximately 210 million people worldwide suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Central News Agency (Translation)
