American researchers today stated that a slow, long-term decrease in brain glucose levels may lead to the development of certain symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
The researchers indicated that results from both human and mouse experiments show that a reduction in blood flow to the brain can cause energy deficits, ultimately leading to the body's production of proteinaceous sticky clumps, a process believed to be the cause of Alzheimer's disease.
Robert Vassar and colleagues from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago pointed out that this research discovery could help in finding strategies to combat Alzheimer's, such as exercise, lowering cholesterol, and controlling blood sugar levels.
