Research shows that vitamin C does not help prevent or alleviate cold symptoms.

The general recommendation for adults is a daily intake of 60 milligrams of vitamin C. However, some vitamin C supplements on the market contain as much as one gram, or 1,000 milligrams. The human body cannot absorb such large amounts of vitamin C, and the excess is excreted through urine.

A British study provided at least 200 milligrams of vitamin C daily to 11,000 participants. They found that taking high doses of vitamin C after catching a cold did not help alleviate symptoms, and starting vitamin C before getting sick did not significantly shorten the duration of the illness.

The study warns that consuming large amounts of vitamin C may cause diarrhea, particularly in children and the elderly.
