A 56-year-old woman discovered pain in her right waist three months ago and was diagnosed with shingles. Although the blisters healed after treatment, the pain persisted. Upon a second medical consultation, it was found to be a chronic complication of shingles known as postherpetic neuralgia. Dermatologists warn that without proper treatment, the pain can last for several years, and middle-aged and elderly patients should be particularly cautious.

Dr. Lin Xinyi, a dermatologist at Chi Mei Medical Center, explained that shingles, commonly known as "snake skin," initially causes pain and abnormal sensations, followed by blister-like rashes a few days later. The incidence of acute shingles in the elderly can be ten times that of the general population, and the rate is also higher in patients with compromised immune systems.

The patient was diagnosed with shingles in the outpatient clinic and was treated with medication but did not return for follow-up. However, she continued to experience persistent pain in her right waist, which became so severe that she could not sleep. After enduring the pain for two months, she sought medical attention again and was diagnosed with postherpetic neuralgia.

Dr. Lin pointed out that the main treatment for postherpetic neuralgia is the use of painkillers alone or in combination. Clinically, about 10% to 20% of shingles patients develop postherpetic neuralgia, but the incidence increases to 60% in patients over 50 years old, reminding older patients to be extra vigilant. 950511
