If your child at home keeps coughing incessantly, be careful! It might not be caused by a cold.
Pediatricians recently encountered a case where a 2-year-old boy ate a piece of swordfish, which then fell into his bronchus, leading to a persistent cough. Doctors warn that the mortality rate in such cases can be as high as 2%.
This 1 cm by 1 cm piece of swordfish was stuck in the boy's bronchus, causing him to cough continuously. Initially, his parents thought it was a cold, and the X-ray showed nothing unusual. It wasn't until the doctor used a rigid bronchoscope to delve into his left lung that the piece was extracted.
If something falls into the bronchus, it just causes continuous coughing, but if it gets stuck in the trachea, the situation becomes serious. Especially since children love to swallow peanuts or small toys they play with in their mouths, accidents can easily happen, and in severe cases, it can be fatal, with a mortality rate of 2%.
Doctors advise that if a child under 3 years old has a foreign object stuck in their trachea, one should quickly pat their back to help the object fall out and rush them to the hospital. Delayed emergency treatment could lead to regrettable outcomes.
