Experts recently verified that the medical bamboo slips discovered in an early Eastern Han Dynasty tomb in Wuwei City, Gansu Province, not only reflect the early medical level of China, but also contain many prescriptions that are the earliest known medical prescriptions in China.
According to Cheng Aimin, deputy director of the Wuwei City Museum in Gansu Province, there are a total of 92 Han Dynasty medical bamboo slips preserved in the Gansu Provincial Museum, 78 of which have been identified as national treasures by the National Cultural Heritage Administration. She said that the content of the bamboo slips is quite rich, encompassing clinical medicine, pharmacology, acupuncture, and other subjects. In terms of clinical medicine, it not only includes descriptions of disease symptoms, names, causes, and pathology, but also many medical prescriptions, which are the earliest known medical prescriptions in China.
These medical bamboo slips contain more than 30 prescriptions across various disciplines, including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, otolaryngology, acupuncture, and other fields, and are very well-preserved. In terms of pharmacology, the slips list more than 100 types of drugs, including 63 plant-based drugs and 12 animal-based drugs. The slips also provide detailed records on the preparation, dosage forms, and methods and timing of drug administration. In terms of acupuncture, the slips document acupuncture points, needle retention methods, and acupuncture contraindications.
Cheng Aimin stated that the Han Dynasty medical bamboo slips are physical materials for studying ancient Chinese medicine, particularly the medical history of the Han Dynasty. They are one of the earliest, most complete, and content-rich medical records in China, reflecting the early medical level and clinical treatment practices of traditional Chinese medicine.
