*The More You Chew, the Better for Your Health
How many times do you chew each bite of food during a meal? Since ancient times, we’ve been reminded to chew slowly and thoroughly. Food broken down by teeth, mixed with saliva, and stirred by the tongue is transformed into a form that’s easier to digest before being sent to the stomach. Therefore, chewing properly aids digestion—and the longer you chew, the better. However, this doesn’t mean you should chew endlessly. So, how many chews are ideal?
Chewing slowly and thoroughly also helps prevent obesity. Additionally, chewing stimulates saliva production, which contains sublingual gland hormones that can help prevent diabetes and arteriosclerosis. Saliva also contains peroxidase, which helps prevent and combat cancer.
Experiments have shown that when various carcinogens are introduced into saliva, the peroxidase can neutralize their toxicity one by one—a process that takes about 30 seconds. Assuming one chew takes about one second, chewing each bite at least 30 times is recommended for optimal cancer prevention. Chewing 30 times per bite is also one of the methods used to treat obesity.
