When children catch a cold and cough, many parents buy cough syrup from pharmacies to relieve their symptoms. However, a British research report indicates that most over-the-counter cough syrups contain codeine. While effective in suppressing coughs, excessive consumption can lead to addiction. For individuals with poor liver or kidney function, as well as infants and young children, it can even pose a fatal risk.

If your child has a cold and coughs frequently, giving them syrup directly might not be the safest option. According to the British study, cough syrups containing codeine are classified as opioid medications and can be highly addictive. Although they effectively relieve pain, coughs, and diarrhea, they may also cause constipation, respiratory depression, and other adverse side effects. For children under 18, the drawbacks outweigh the benefits, and for infants, the risks can be life-threatening.

Many well-known pharmaceutical brands produce cough syrups or pain relievers containing codeine, which are harmful not only to children but also to adults. The Department of Health warns that prolonged reliance on such cough syrups can lead to addiction symptoms like hallucinations and delusions in adults. Sudden discontinuation may result in body aches, yawning, or insomnia. To avoid health risks, it is advised to seek medical attention for colds and coughs rather than self-medicating with over-the-counter drugs for safety.
