A surgeon recently made medical history by donating blood to a young boy while performing a heart valve replacement surgery on him.
Samuel Weinstein, a physician with Heart Care International, an organization that travels the world to perform heart surgeries for those who cannot afford them, was operating on eight-year-old Hernandez in El Salvador when the boy began to bleed uncontrollably. Realizing that the boy shared his blood type, Weinstein decided on the spot to donate his own blood to the patient on the operating table.
While Weinstein was donating blood, his colleague Robert Michler, the founder of Heart Care International, continued with the surgery. The operation was successfully completed, and the boy is recovering well. Weinstein stated, "Every member of the medical team contributed to saving the boy's life, and this is our most fulfilling moment."
It is understood that this may be the first time in medical history that a surgeon has donated blood to a patient while performing surgery.
