If you really want to lose weight, take it seriously and find a sustainable method to stick to. Otherwise, fluctuating between gaining and losing weight not only looks bad but could also be life-threatening!

The Daily Mail in London reports that the latest experiments show that improper weight loss in teenagers, involving extreme dieting followed by binge eating, could reduce their lifespan by up to a quarter.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow studied stickleback fish, which have an average lifespan of two years. One group was fed the same amount daily, while another group was initially starved for several days before being overfed. Both groups ended up consuming the same total amount of food to study the effects of varying food supply. The findings revealed that although the second group did not age faster, their average lifespan was shortened by six months.

Professor Metcalfe, a behavioral biology professor involved in the study, stated: "The lifespan difference between the two groups was only six months, but in percentage terms, this is a significant gap. Regardless of how long they lived, the second group's lifespan was always shorter. We cannot determine the exact cause of death, but it is speculated to be equivalent to heart disease or stroke."

In the research report published in the UK's "Royal Society Journal," researchers noted that if feeding conditions vary too drastically, stickleback fish may experience significant physical deterioration. Metcalfe explained: "We believe this may be due to the higher likelihood of tissue defects during periods of rapid growth."

Researchers believe these findings may also apply to humans, with children and teenagers being the most vulnerable.
