【China Times Electronic News】

Due to significant changes in societal dietary patterns, the incidence of colorectal cancer has been steadily increasing in recent years. According to statistics from the Department of Health, colorectal cancer is now the third most common cancer. The occurrence of rectal cancer is closely related to abnormal dietary patterns. Based on domestic and international research, colorectal cancer is associated with the following factors:

1. High intake of animal fats increases the concentration of bile acids in feces, which can promote the development of colorectal cancer. Additionally, high-fat foods are often high in calories. Recent studies have shown that excessive calorie intake and being overweight also increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

2. Insufficient intake of fiber can also lead to colorectal cancer. Fiber, primarily found in vegetables and fruits, binds with carcinogens, adsorbs bile acids, cholesterol, and harmful substances. Being insoluble and water-retentive, it increases stool volume and promotes bowel movements, facilitating the rapid excretion of adsorbed carcinogens and reducing the risk of colorectal cancer. Conversely, too little fiber intake may increase the risk of cancer.

3. Inadequate calcium intake may also trigger colorectal cancer, as calcium can bind with bile acids and fatty acids, thereby reducing the contact time between these bile acids and the intestinal wall, preventing colorectal cancer.

4. Reduced intake of vitamins A, C, E, and the mineral selenium may decrease the body's antioxidants, affecting the growth and differentiation of colorectal mucosal cells and leading to colorectal cancer.

To prevent colorectal cancer, the following adjustments to diet and lifestyle habits are recommended:

1. Increase intake of fresh vegetables and fruits rich in fiber and vitamins.
2. Reduce consumption of high-fat foods.
3. Avoid smoked, pickled, preserved, and spicy foods.
4. Increase calcium intake.
5. Exercise more and maintain an ideal body weight.
6. Maintain regular bowel habits and avoid constipation.
