A 29-year-old woman surnamed Peng was found dead in her bed by her family. The deceased weighed 120 kilograms and had visited a weight-loss clinic in Hsinchu City a month prior, attending a total of three consultations. Each time, she was prescribed weight-loss medication to take home. When investigators arrived to examine the scene, they seized the remaining uningested weight-loss drugs in her room. Although the confiscated
drugs were suspected to primarily consist of diuretics and laxatives , whether they were related to the cause of death remains unclear. Investigators stated that an autopsy would be conducted and the drugs would be sent for testing before confirmation could be made. (Reported by Peng Qingren)
The 29-year-old woman surnamed Peng, who lived in Xinfeng Township, Hsinchu County, worked as an operator at a technology factory in the Hukou Industrial Zone. Weighing 120 kilograms, she had long struggled with obesity. Previously, she had sought treatment at a well-known weight-loss clinic but saw little improvement. On March 5, upon a colleague's recommendation, she switched to another weight-loss clinic in Hsinchu City. Unexpectedly, on the evening of the 7th, her family discovered her dead in her room at home. Suspecting that her death was due to excessive weight loss, the family urged investigators to uncover the truth. The authorities confiscated the remaining uningested medication in her room for testing.
After examining the scene, investigators noted that the deceased showed no signs of obvious illness, but a significant amount of unused weight-loss drugs were found in her room. Preliminary investigations suggested these drugs primarily contained diuretics and laxatives. However, whether these drugs were directly linked to her death would require confirmation through autopsy and drug testing. The clinic stated that during her consultation, Peng had reported conditions such as constipation, high uric acid, smoking, irregular lifestyle, a preference for salty foods, and low water intake. In her first week, she successfully lost three kilograms. The clinic, which had been operating for over two years, had a steady stream of patients and expressed surprise at Peng's sudden death.
During the investigation, authorities also discovered that Peng, who stood 164 centimeters tall but weighed 120 kilograms, likely led a reclusive life due to her extreme obesity. She had no romantic relationships, a simple social circle, and rarely went out except for interactions with colleagues.
