[Reporter Yang Peihua / Taipei Report]

A man surnamed Liu was riding a 1000CC heavy motorcycle through Xizhi, New Taipei City's Xintaiwu Road early yesterday morning when he collided with a pedestrian crossing the street. Liu was thrown from the bike, which slid nearly 100 meters before catching fire. The pedestrian, a man surnamed Ma, died after being rushed to the hospital, while Liu, the rider, was left severely injured and unconscious.

Residents of nearby buildings and Liu's fellow riders said that as three heavy motorcycles passed through a curve, they noticed someone crossing the road and continuously honked their horns as a warning. Unexpectedly, Liu, who was riding in the lead, still hit the pedestrian.

The heavy motorcycle slid and burst into flames.

Police investigation revealed that at around midnight yesterday, 25-year-old Liu, along with two other heavy motorcycle riders, was riding from Jinshan, New Taipei City, through Xizhi's Xintaiwu Road, intending to return to his residence in Tucheng, New Taipei City. Meanwhile, a 35-year-old resident surnamed Ma, who lived in a community building along Xintaiwu Road Section 2, was driving home with his wife and child. After parking his car by the roadside and crossing the street, Ma was struck by the heavy motorcycle, instantly sent flying. Liu and his bike crashed, with the motorcycle sliding nearly 100 meters before catching fire, while Liu lay unconscious on the ground.

After the accident, Liu's fellow riders and building residents called the police. The fire was extinguished within five minutes, and both injured parties were sent to the hospital. Unfortunately, Ma succumbed to his severe injuries and passed away around 1 a.m. yesterday, while Liu remained in critical condition and unconscious. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The road is as dangerous as a tiger’s mouth. In the early morning, a fatal accident occurred in Xizhi involving a heavy motorcycle. A pedestrian illegally crossed the median divider, and the heavy motorcycle, unable to brake in time, collided directly. The pedestrian died after being sent to the hospital, while the motorcyclist was injured, and the entire motorcycle was burned to ashes.

The heavy motorcycle lying on the ground had been reduced to a charred wreck, with only the rear license plate still visible, confirming it was indeed a heavy motorcycle. Parts and helmets were scattered everywhere. At the time of the accident, a 35-year-old man had illegally crossed the median divider. The heavy motorcycle, traveling at a speed exceeding 100 kilometers per hour , had no chance to stop and collided directly. The pedestrian died on the spot, and the motorcycle burst into flames.

The accident occurred around midnight on Xintaiwu Road in Xizhi, Taipei County. With few cars on the road at the time, two heavy motorcycles were cruising in tandem from Xizhi toward Keelung. Due to poor visibility and excessive speed, the pedestrian suddenly dashed out from the median. The motorcycle skidded, its fuel tank ruptured, and friction sparked a fire, instantly turning it into a fireball. The rider was severely injured, and the pedestrian died. Had the motorcycle been slower or the pedestrian taken a few more steps to use the crosswalk, this tragedy could have been avoided. (Reporters Li Mingwei and Yang Shunqin)
