Internet addiction may not just be an issue for Taiwanese youth; it’s a global phenomenon. Recent data from the UK’s YouthNet shows that 76% of local teenagers believe the internet is a safe place, while in Taiwan, over 99% of teenagers use the internet. However, domestic psychiatrists warn that internet addicts often think they know what they’re doing—when in fact, they don’t—and emphasize the importance of moderation in internet use.

Professor Michael Hulme of Lancaster University in the UK once remarked that today’s youth are born into a generation immersed in computers and mobile communication technology. Among those aged 16 to 24, a new demographic has emerged, which he calls "Digital Natives."

Regarding teenagers’ internet use and addiction, Dr. Chung Kuo-hsuan, a psychiatrist at Taipei Medical University Hospital, noted that the most dangerous aspect of internet addiction is that addicts only see the benefits of the internet while completely ignoring its negative impacts. "Their eyes are fixed on the screen, and their minds can’t focus on anything else."

Dr. Chang Yu-chang, a psychiatrist at Taiwan Adventist Hospital, believes that those heavily reliant on the internet may lack confidence in real life, leading them to seek comfort online. Additionally, internet addicts often have lower tolerance for frustration and struggle with interpersonal communication, driving them to seek a sense of achievement and fulfillment in the virtual world.

Experts caution that while the internet is indeed a powerful tool for modern communication and information retrieval, excessive use—to the point where it becomes the center of one’s life—can turn people into prisoners of their computers. They urge everyone to exercise moderation and not let computers control their lives.

According to recent data released by the Taiwan Network Information Center, 70.95% of Taiwan’s population aged 12 and above use the internet, with males (73.03%) slightly outnumbering females (68.86%). The highest usage rate is among those aged 15 to 19 (99.45%).

The most commonly used functions are: "searching for information" (59.90%), browsing information/webpages (48.45%), and sending/receiving emails (33.21%). This aligns with data from the UK charity YouthNet, which shows that nearly 80% of young people rely on the internet to solve problems.

Furthermore, YouthNet’s survey revealed that among 16- to 24-year-olds, 76% believe the internet is a safe place "because they know what they’re doing." Additionally, 30% stated that since information is readily available online, there’s no need for face-to-face consultations.
