A study from Australia, as reported by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), suggests that for elderly individuals, being moderately overweight may lead to a longer lifespan compared to those with a normal weight.

However, severe overweight or underweight conditions can shorten life expectancy.

The study, published in the *Journal of the American Geriatrics Society*, indicates that dieting may not be beneficial for this age group.

The research, which involved 9,200 individuals over the age of 70, found that a sedentary lifestyle shortens lifespan regardless of weight, particularly for women.

Conducted by the University of Western Australia, the study aimed to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the lowest mortality risk in the elderly.

Professor Leon Flicker from the University of Western Australia noted that there has been a significant increase in attention toward encouraging overweight elderly individuals to lose weight.

For younger people, being overweight or obese undoubtedly poses health risks.
