Can Good Sleep Help You Lose Weight Naturally? Many people attribute weight gain to overeating or lack of exercise, but maintaining a regular sleep schedule may be more important than dieting. A U.S. medical study found that women who sleep 7 to 8 hours every night tend to be the slimmest, while those who sleep only 3 to 5 hours have a 73% higher obesity rate and could gain up to 5.7 kg in a year.

Dr. Daniel F. Kripke from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, surveyed over 1.1 million people to study human sleep behavior. His research focused on women aged 30 to 102, revealing that those who slept 7 to 8 hours had the lowest BMI, with a maximum of 24. In contrast, women who slept fewer than 5 hours or more than 10 hours saw their BMI rise, even exceeding 26.

According to Taiwan’s adult obesity standards, a BMI below 18.5 is underweight, above 24 is overweight, and over 27 is obese. For a 160 cm-tall woman, those who slept 3 hours weighed over 5 kg more than those who slept 7 hours. Participants who slept fewer than 4 hours had a 73% higher obesity rate compared to those who slept 7 to 9 hours.

Extending this logic, those who slept 5 hours had a 52% higher obesity rate, confirming that sleep truly affects weight. However, experts also warn that oversleeping can backfire—sleeping more than 10 hours not only leads to obesity but may also cause abnormal blood sugar levels. For those struggling to lose weight, examining sleep habits could be key. To stay healthy and slim, getting good sleep is essential.
