Obesity is a concern for modern people and a worry for those who care about their appearance. Zhang Chunfang, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physician at Chiayi Hospital, pointed out that using the heat from a hairdryer to blow on certain acupoints can indeed help with weight loss. In TCM, there is a method called "Five Pillar Moxibustion," which involves acupuncture at acupoints near the stomach, such as Juque, Zhongwan, Xiawan, and the left and right Liangmen. This can reduce stomach capacity, create a feeling of fullness, and achieve the goal of weight loss. If one does not have time to visit the hospital, they can also use a hairdryer at home to blow on these acupoints for three to five minutes daily to achieve body-shaping effects.
Modern people are most prone to "lower body obesity," especially abdominal obesity. Zhang Chunfang stated that those with abdominal obesity are at high risk for heart disease. Men with a waist circumference exceeding 90 centimeters and women exceeding 80 centimeters are considered at risk and should lose weight immediately to maintain health.
Dr. Zhang emphasized that TCM's "Five Pillar Moxibustion" involves acupuncture at five acupoints near the stomach: Juque, Zhongwan, Xiawan, and the left and right Liangmen. This can reduce stomach capacity and create a feeling of fullness, aiding in weight loss. The "Five Pillar Moxibustion" can also be done at home. If patients cannot return for regular check-ups, she teaches them to use a hairdryer on these acupoints for three to five minutes daily, blowing on each acupoint for five to ten seconds. Consistency will show results, but it is not advisable when too hungry or too full.
Dr. Zhang mentioned that using a hairdryer for body shaping should still be done under a doctor's guidance to avoid burns. If using a hairdryer is too troublesome, one can ask family members for help or use a hot compress bag placed on the area from the chest to the navel, applying heat to the five acupoints: Juque, Zhongwan, Xiawan, and the left and right Liangmen. This can also treat allergy symptoms.
Dr. Zhang pointed out that TCM uses four methods for abdominal body shaping: acupuncture, acupoint massage, ear acupuncture, and ear seed embedding. These methods stimulate acupoints such as Jiaoyi, Chengming, Zigong, Jingzhong, Daheng, Tianshu, Zusanli, Juque, Zhongwan, and the left Liangmen, to unblock meridians, regulate the spleen and stomach, enhance metabolism, and achieve body shaping. Although these acupoints can be massaged at home, her patients often find it troublesome and prefer to visit the hospital for professional treatment to achieve weight loss effects.
