The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted random inspections of pesticide residues in agricultural products on the market and found that a batch of bananas from Qishan, Kaohsiung exceeded pesticide limits by nearly 200 times. Additionally, beefsteak tomatoes, a common ingredient in hot pot dishes, were found for the first time to contain pesticides that did not meet safety standards. The public is reminded to wash bananas before consumption to avoid contaminating hands and subsequently other foods. (Reported by Wu Pei-zhen)
The FDA regularly monitors pesticide residues in agricultural products sold in markets and packaging facilities. In October, 169 samples were tested, with 22 failing to meet standards. Among them was a batch of bananas from Qishan, Kaohsiung, which contained "Carbendazim" at levels 193 times above the limit. Lin Jie-liang, director of the Clinical Toxicology Department at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, stated that Carbendazim is a potential carcinogen, and long-term consumption may lead to liver tumors.
Lin Jie-liang said: "Carbendazim is a common fungicide used to prevent mold growth on fruits and vegetables. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies it as a probable carcinogen, with long-term consumption posing a risk of liver tumors. The public is reminded to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with running water before eating, including bananas." Lin added: "Remember to soak bananas in running water for 15 minutes before peeling, then scrub them clean with a soft brush. This prevents contamination of your hands and indirect ingestion of the fungicide. The same applies to other peelable fruits like oranges."
In addition to bananas, the FDA also detected non-compliant beefsteak tomatoes for the first time. Two batches from Hsinchu were found to contain prohibited pesticides "Carbendazim" and "Fludioxonil." Lin Jie-liang explained that while Fludioxonil is less toxic and can be metabolized within about an hour, Carbendazim is more toxic, acts as an environmental hormone, and carries reproductive risks such as reduced sperm count, birth defects, and lymphoma. The public is advised to wash even peelable fruits before eating.Source:
