With the Qingming Festival just a week away, the New Taipei City Health Bureau conducted inspections on 10 bean curd products at supermarkets and traditional markets. One product, white dried bean curd shreds sold at a well-known chain supermarket, was found to contain hydrogen peroxide. Excessive consumption can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. According to Article 12 of the Health Management Act, the seller faces a fine of NT$30,000 to NT$150,000.

Gluten and bean curd are common offerings during the Qingming Festival. Out of the 10 bean curd products tested by the New Taipei City Health Bureau from supermarkets and markets, the white dried bean curd shreds sold at RT-Mart's Banqiao branch were found to contain hydrogen peroxide. Lin Guan-zhen, head of the Food and Drug Management Section of the New Taipei City Health Bureau, warned that ingestion could lead to nausea and vomiting.

When verified, RT-Mart stated the product had already been removed from shelves. Further investigation traced the source manufacturer to a residential address on Guilin Road in Wanhua. The manufacturer denied producing dried bean curd shreds. The problematic manufacturer could face a maximum fine of NT$150,000 under the Food Sanitation Management Act.

To prevent the public from consuming harmful food, the Health Bureau is offering hydrogen peroxide testing kits at 29 health centers. A drop or two on food containing hydrogen peroxide will turn light yellow or brown in less than a minute. If consumers suspect food contains hydrogen peroxide residues, they can preserve the product and report it to the Health Bureau.
