The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and local health bureaus launched an "Inspection Project for Soybean Product Factories and Manufacturers" in June, inspecting 21 soybean product factories. Among them, 16 manufacturers failed to meet hygiene standards, with a non-compliance rate as high as 76.2%. Feng Runlan, director of the FDA's Northern Regional Management Center, stated that while preservatives are only permitted in dried tofu products, testing of 58 soybean products revealed 13 tofu items containing preservatives such as benzoic acid or sorbic acid. The authorities have requested the relevant manufacturers to make improvements. (Reported by Huang Zhongqiu)
During the hot summer months, soybean products like tofu and dried tofu are prone to bacterial growth due to their high protein content and water activity. Currently, preservatives within safe limits are allowed in dried tofu products, but no preservatives whatsoever are permitted in tofu. The FDA and local health bureaus initiated the "Inspection Project for Soybean Product Factories and Manufacturers" in June, inspecting 21 factories, 16 of which failed hygiene standards. Aside from non-compliant manufacturing processes, testing of 58 soybean products found two dried tofu items exceeding benzoic acid limits and 13 tofu products containing benzoic acid or sorbic acid. Additionally, five dried tofu products were found to contain hydrogen peroxide, a prohibited sterilizing agent.
Feng Runlan noted that soybean product manufacturing is a traditional industry, and some violations occurred due to manufacturers' lack of awareness of regulations. The primary goal of this inspection was to encourage compliance. Feng stated, "Tofu and dried tofu cannot be stored for too long. If dried tofu is stored for an extended period, its surface becomes slippery, indicating it is no longer fresh. This inspection was conducted in June, and our focus is ensuring future compliance. Preservatives are only permitted in dried tofu products, and current violations involve excessive usage. Our goal is to bring manufacturers in line with regulations—this is the key focus of the inspection."
The FDA reported that among the 21 inspected manufacturers, 11 have since passed re-inspection, one has ceased operations, and another still partially fails to meet standards after re-inspection. Further improvements will be made before another re-inspection is conducted.
