Yesterday, Uni-President was exposed for using Ting Hsin’s beef tallow in over ten of its products. Upon hearing the news, the Consumers’ Foundation and the Homemakers United Foundation simultaneously called on consumers not only to "eliminate Ting Hsin" but also to boycott Uni-President. Lai Xiaofen, secretary-general of the Homemakers United Foundation, said, "They are practically birds of a feather."

Failing to Disclose Voluntarily—Only Recalling Products After FDA Announcement

Lai Xiaofen angrily stated that Uni-President had previously stood by and watched, distanced itself, and failed to voluntarily disclose potential issues with its products or conduct preventive recalls. It only pulled products after the FDA announced the findings—truly a "black-hearted corporation!"

Lai Xiaofen harshly criticized Uni-President, saying the company controls many distribution channels, including 7-Eleven, making its harm even greater. By concealing the issue until now, it deserves even harsher condemnation. Consumers should not only target the "eliminate Ting Hsin" movement but also strongly boycott Uni-President’s food products.

Lei Lifen, secretary-general of the Consumers’ Foundation, also emphasized that Uni-President and Ting Hsin are equally bad. While Ting Hsin’s use of feed-grade oil at the source is heinous, major companies like Uni-President and Wowprime, which are large-scale and publicly listed, have shown a lack of self-regulation. Now they are all shifting blame to their suppliers, operating under the mindset of continuing sales until caught, then simply issuing refunds while avoiding talk of compensation.

Lei Lifen condemned Uni-President, saying it fails to perform even the most basic consumer protection duties, making it just as bad as Ting Hsin.

DPP Legislator Lin Shu-fen stated that Uni-President had been purchasing cheap lard from Chang Guann for three years. "Could they not have known about the oil’s quality?" She criticized Uni-President as "not a victim" and accused the government of "covering up for Uni-President and downplaying the issue."

Legislator Lin Shu-fen’s Facebook Post: Uni-President Bought Chang Guann’s Oil for Three Years

Last night, Lin Shu-fen posted on Facebook: "Did Uni-President only buy Ting Hsin’s beef tallow? No, they also bought an unknown quantity of Chang Guann’s lard for nearly three years. Uni-President claims it was Japanese-imported lard from Chang Guann, and the government accepted that. Do you believe it?"

Lin Shu-fen said: "Uni-President’s own Tong Qing imported a large amount of Spanish lard, averaging around NT$40 per kilogram. Why would they commission Chang Guann to buy Japanese lard at about NT$34 per kilogram? The reasonable assumption is cost-saving. I suspect cheaper oil was used to fry instant noodles to cut costs. If I were to buy Chang Guann’s oil, I’d go for their fake lard at NT$20-something per kilogram—that’s the best deal, don’t you think?"

Acting FDA Director-General Chiang Yu-mei said that according to the inspection results reported by the FDA and Kaohsiung’s health bureau, Chang Guann stored Japanese-imported lard and oil from other sources in separate tanks. Chang Guann explained that the Japanese lard was only sold to Uni-President or Tong Qing, and inspectors found matching records.

As for why Uni-President and Tong Qing purchased oil from Japan through Chang Guann, Chiang Yu-mei said it was legal free trade between businesses. "She (Lin Shu-fen) can suspect, but the FDA cannot speculate!"

Tu Zhongzheng, manager of Uni-President’s Public Affairs Department, stated that Uni-President’s oil supply chain is transparent, and relevant government authorities had inspected the company as recently as the day before yesterday.
