Huang Maoxiong: No Need to Kick Someone When They're Down; Will Still Use Products Without Issues, Standing by Them

The food safety storm continues to intensify, with Ting Hsin and Namchow oils successively implicated. Huang Maoxiong, founder of MOS Burger and chairman of Teco Group, expressed at a recent meeting that "this is a shock and a regrettable incident." He emphasized the need to return to fundamentals, urging both businesses and the government to prioritize the management of food ingredient sources. After all, "profit comes second—the most important thing is to ensure consumer confidence."

Huang Maoxiong stated that the Wei family should make serious changes. When asked whether MOS Burger would join the boycott against Ting Hsin, he responded that problematic Ting Hsin products would be discontinued, but non-issue products might still be used.

Han Jiayu, chairman of Great Wall Group, remarked that intentionally mixing feed or industrial oils into edible oils or gutter oil—knowing it was illegal—was "absolutely unacceptable." However, if companies altered import categories merely to evade taxes, it might be worth considering whether excessive distribution costs and squeezed profits drove them to exploit loopholes. "Perhaps the government should review the system."

**Source Control to Eliminate Problems**

Lin Cangzhi, chairman of Asia Food, noted that repeated food safety scandals would inevitably harm economic development and tourism. He recommended that companies establish laboratories and control ingredient sources, as only strict oversight from the origin could prevent issues.

Huang Maoxiong pointed out that Ting Hsin had been embroiled in food safety scandals three times in a year, severely damaging Taiwan's food industry reputation. When he founded MOS Burger, he was already aware of food safety concerns, hence naming it "Anxin Food" (meaning "Safe Food").

Given his deep concern for food safety, Huang admitted to constant vigilance. While he couldn’t claim perfection, he assured consumers that MOS Burger would never cut corners to reduce costs. Profit, though important, should never overshadow the priority of consumer safety. "Making money must also contribute to a healthier society."

Regarding Ting Hsin’s repeated failures, Huang believed there was "no need to kick them while they're down." Instead, it was time to "return to basics," with both businesses and the government focusing on source management and collective improvement.

**Will Remind Wei Ying-chung When Meeting**

Huang acknowledged that Taiwan would face a transitional period but was confident in its ability to enforce quality control. "If major companies uphold standards, the entire system will improve." He added that he would remind Wei Ying-chung, Ting Hsin’s third-generation chairman, of this during their next meeting.

Wang Wenyuan, president of Formosa Plastics Group, observed that food safety issues were not new but had accumulated to a breaking point. On whether the government should take responsibility, he noted that the food safety chain was long, involving too many regulatory bodies. The key was for "everyone to fulfill their own duties."

Douglas Hsu, chairman of Far Eastern Group, stated that food safety involved too many complex links for the government to manage entirely. Instead, corporate leaders must take responsibility and exercise self-restraint to prevent such crises. His group had already removed 70-80% of Ting Hsin and Wei Chuan products from shelves.

Jonney Shih, chairman of ASUS and a vegetarian for over a decade, advocated for simplicity in food, believing "the simpler, the better." He encouraged promoting vegetarianism, citing FDA confirmation that plant-based diets could supply essential amino acids.
