According to a European study, eating less meat may help maintain a slim figure. Researchers from Imperial College London found that over five years, meat lovers gained more weight than those who ate less meat, even when consuming the same amount of calories. After studying different types of meat, they discovered that poultry contributed the most to weight gain, followed by processed meat and red meat.
The report, published in the *American Journal of Clinical Nutrition*, noted that over five years of follow-up, men and women gained an average of about 1 pound per year, with women gaining slightly less. The more meat consumed, the greater the weight gain—eating an additional 250 grams of meat daily led to a 4.4-pound increase over five years. Based on this, reducing daily meat intake by 250 grams could result in a 4-pound weight loss over the same period.
The research team, led by Dr. Anne-Claire Vergnaud, stated that while an average weight gain of 4 pounds over five years may seem relatively small on an individual level, it "could have a significant effect" at the population level.
