British scientists have revealed in a recent study that maintaining a slim figure is not only beneficial for personal health but also helps protect the Earth's environment.
Research from University College London found that overweight individuals emit more greenhouse gases than their slimmer counterparts, both in terms of food consumption and transportation. On average, they release an additional ton of carbon dioxide per year, causing greater environmental harm. The findings were published in the latest issue of the *International Journal of Epidemiology*.
The study notes that food production is a major contributor to global warming. Countries with higher obesity rates consume more food and generate more greenhouse gases.
For instance, with the same population size, a leaner country like Vietnam consumes 20% less food on average compared to a nation like the U.S., where nearly 40% of the population is overweight. This results in lower greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, transportation-related emissions are reduced because slimmer individuals expend less energy and overweight people are more likely to rely on cars.
The study estimates that a population of one billion leaner individuals produces one billion fewer tons of greenhouse gas CO₂ annually compared to a similarly sized overweight population. This means each overweight person emits, on average, one ton more CO₂ per year than a slimmer individual.
A previous EU study found that the average EU citizen emits 11 tons of greenhouse gases annually.
