For the first time, the World Health Organization (WHO) has explicitly listed mobile phone usage as a possible factor in developing brain tumors. According to a 10-year study, the WHO stated that people who use mobile phones for 30 minutes daily have a 40% increased risk of developing glioma, a type of brain tumor. Therefore, the public is advised to use non-handheld communication tools such as landline phones or text messages whenever possible.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the WHO, convened a panel of 31 scientists from 14 countries. After a week of deliberation, they concluded that mobile phone usage may pose a carcinogenic risk.

The IARC pointed out that electromagnetic waves generated by wireless communication devices, including mobile phones, could be carcinogenic. As a result, it is necessary to closely monitor the link between mobile phone use and cancer risk.

WHO experts have classified mobile phones as a Group 2B carcinogen, placing them in the same category as car exhaust fumes, DDT, lead, and formaldehyde in terms of cancer risk. Previously, the WHO had stated there was no conclusive evidence linking mobile phone use to cancer.

Currently, there are 5 billion mobile phone users worldwide. With the diverse applications of social media and smartphones, users are spending more time on their devices, even developing dependency—a phenomenon known as "nomophobia" (no mobile phone phobia).

Beware, using a mobile phone may increase the risk of brain cancer! The World Health Organization's (WHO) advisory body, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has indicated that mobile phone use may elevate the risk of brain cancer and should be classified as a "possible carcinogen," alongside pesticides like DDT and car exhaust.

Experts Urge Classification as Group 2B Possible Carcinogen

Experts recommend replacing direct phone-to-ear calls with texting or hands-free devices to reduce exposure to mobile phone radiation. This marks the first scientific assessment of all relevant literature on whether mobile phones increase cancer risk.

The IARC, composed of 31 scientists from 14 countries, announced after a meeting that the radiofrequency electromagnetic fields generated by mobile phones could potentially cause cancer. Experts believe it should be classified as Group 2B ("possibly carcinogenic to humans") in the organization's carcinogen classification system.

Heavy Users Face 40% Higher Risk of Glioma

The IARC did not conduct new research but evaluated existing epidemiological studies. IARC Chairman and University of Southern California epidemiologist Jonathan Samet stated that data suggests an increased incidence of malignant brain tumors, particularly "glioma," among mobile phone users. Notably, two of the largest decade-long studies indicated that "heavy users" faced a higher cancer risk, with some cases involving an average of 30 minutes of daily phone use over ten years. Kuo Hsien-Lan, head of the National Health Administration's Cancer Prevention and Control Division, added that according to an IARC report last year, heavy users faced a 40% increased risk of glioma.

Lead author Kurt Straif noted that evidence points to higher rates of glioma and non-malignant acoustic neuroma, but "there is no definitive proof that mobile phone use directly causes cancer." "Using text messages or hands-free devices clearly reduces exposure by at least one order of magnitude," or tenfold.

The IARC's carcinogen classification system ranks substances from highest to lowest risk (Groups 1 to 4). Group 1 includes confirmed carcinogens like dioxin and asbestos, Group 2A includes "probably carcinogenic" substances, and Group 2B includes "possibly carcinogenic" substances. Group 2B currently lists 240 items, including DDT, car exhaust, lead, and two familiar foods: pickled vegetables and coffee. These foods were cited by the wireless industry group CTIA to counter the IARC's conclusions. Currently, there are 5 billion mobile phones in use worldwide.

Dr. Yang Zhen-Chang, a toxicologist at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, stated that WHO's announcement mainly follows last year's IARC report compiling research from 13 countries. It does not present new findings or confirm that phone use causes brain cancer but reiterates the need for further tracking of high-frequency mobile phone users.
