The World Health Organization has for the first time acknowledged that mobile phones may cause cancer. Given that children's skulls are not yet fully developed, and considering the widespread use of mobile phones in the country, domestic medical experts recommend that the government follow the lead of countries like the UK and Germany by prohibiting children under 14 from using mobile phones to safeguard their health.

The debate over whether mobile phones may cause cancer has persisted for years, and yesterday, the WHO finally confirmed it. Dr. Jiang Shoushan from the Department of Nephrology at Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital pointed out that academic studies worldwide have long suggested a potential link between frequent mobile phone use and cancer. One of the clearer findings comes from Israel, where mobile phone usage is the highest in the world—research shows a higher incidence of parotid gland cancer on the side of the head where the phone is commonly held, strongly correlating with mobile phone use.

Dr. Liang Tingji from the Department of Radiology at Taipei Medical University explained that the electromagnetic waves emitted by mobile phones are similar to those from microwave ovens and, in principle, do not directly damage cell chromosomes. However, mobile phones emit radiofrequency energy during use, which can indirectly affect chromosome and cellular metabolism, potentially leading to pathological changes. Currently, suspicions lean toward a connection with gliomas. Past studies in the UK have found that using mobile phones for over a decade increases the risk of brain tumors.

Dr. Jiang Shoushan emphasized that children are at greater risk from mobile phone use than adults. Research shows that electromagnetic waves from mobile phones can penetrate an adult's skull up to one centimeter, but they can "pass through" the developing heads of children, causing more significant harm. Parents who allow their children to use mobile phones daily at an early age may unknowingly be harming them. The government should follow international examples and impose restrictions to protect future generations.

How can the risks of mobile phone use be minimized? Dr. Liang Tingji suggests switching to low-energy or simpler-function phones, as more complex devices like iPhones and 3G phones emit stronger electromagnetic waves. Users can also opt for hands-free devices and avoid prolonged phone calls to reduce health impacts.
