The environmental group Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ) recently tested nearly 1,000 children's products in New York City and found that 75% of the samples contained phthalates, with levels exceeding U.S. standards by dozens of times.
According to a report by the U.S. environmental group, some brightly colored and smooth-surfaced children's products—such as stationery, backpacks, folders, lunch boxes, and rain boots—contain the toxic substance phthalates. Prolonged exposure in children may lead to asthma, hyperactivity, diabetes, and in severe cases, delayed intellectual development or even death.
Mike Schade, director of CHEJ, advised parents to avoid overly bright-colored plastic products when shopping for school supplies, as these materials often contain phthalates or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can harm human health.
New York Senator Charles Schumer stated that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has already recommended the removal of children's products and toys containing phthalates from shelves. He urged authorities to expedite legislation banning their sale to address the issue at its root.
Phthalates are the most widely used, diverse, and highest-volume plasticizers. Recent studies have found that phthalates can enter the human body through the respiratory tract, digestive system, and skin, leading to reduced sperm count and motility in males, interference with normal male genital development, and an increased risk of breast cancer in females, among other effects. Currently, the U.S. and the EU have established regulations on phthalates to minimize further harm to human health.
