A study by the University of Michigan has found that the HIV/AIDS virus can lie dormant in bone marrow cells, evading treatment drugs, and then reactivate to cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

The research, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Burroughs Wellcome Foundation, the University of Michigan, and other institutions, has been published in the journal *Nature Medicine*.

Lead researcher Kathleen Collins stated that the HIV/AIDS virus can invade bone marrow cells and evade treatment drugs. When these bone marrow cells transform into blood cells, HIV/AIDS can reactivate, kill the new blood cells, and then infect other cells.

Collins pointed out that while AIDS medications can prevent patient death, once treatment is stopped, the disease may relapse, indicating that some viruses can hide and wait for drug therapy to end before reactivating.

The study emphasizes the importance of identifying the latent locations of HIV/AIDS. If dormant viruses can be eliminated, patients would not need lifelong medication. For countries with limited medical resources, finding a one-time cure is crucial to improving survival rates.
