Napping really helps the brain become more alert. A study shows that taking a one-hour nap after lunch can enhance the brain's learning ability.

This study from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) indicates that napping not only refreshes the mind but can also make people smarter. Conversely, the longer one stays awake, the slower the brain becomes. The study found that students who stay up late studying experience a nearly 40% reduction in brain function compared to those with regular sleep schedules.

Researchers divided 39 healthy young students into two groups: one group had a habit of napping, while the other did not rest at noon. All 39 participants were asked to complete a task designed to engage the brain's hippocampus at noon. However, the napping group rested for 90 minutes at 2 p.m., while the non-napping group engaged in other activities.

At 6 p.m., both groups resumed learning. The results showed that the learning ability of the non-napping students began to decline, while those who napped not only showed significant improvement in their learning state but also enhanced their learning capacity.

These findings support the researchers' hypothesis that the purpose of sleep is to clear short-term memory space in the brain to receive new information. The hippocampus is where the brain stores short-term memories, and sleep helps the hippocampus transfer these memories to the prefrontal cortex, freeing up space to store more new memories.
