Everyone knows that exercise is beneficial to health. The latest research has found that brisk walking for half an hour every day can reduce the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer. Other activities like cycling and dancing also have similar effects.
Many people go to the gym after work or on weekends to enjoy the exhilaration of sweating, but the benefits of exercise go beyond that. A recent UK study found that brisk walking for half an hour daily can significantly lower the risk of certain cancers.
World Cancer Research Fund researcher: "Being physically active reduces the risk of developing cancer, as well as the risk of other chronic diseases like heart disease."
Scientists say exercise can regulate hormone levels in the body, reducing the risk of breast cancer by up to 50%. Additionally, exercise aids digestion and can lower the risk of colon cancer by about 25%. However, brisk walking doesn’t necessarily require a gym—choosing to walk instead of taking the bus or driving when shopping can be just as effective.
Breast cancer survivor: "Walking is free, enjoyable, and worthwhile. It gets your heart pumping, and by the end of the day, you feel great."
Experts say any activity that increases your heart rate and deepens your breathing—such as cycling, dancing, or even gardening—has the same cancer-preventing effects. So stop making excuses and dedicate 30 minutes a day to exercise to stay away from the threat of cancer.
