According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, Dr. Yang Wenqing, Vice Chairman of the Singapore Society of Periodontology, pointed out that the consequences of neglecting to brush teeth may not only be tooth decay, but in severe cases, could also lead to more diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

Dr. Yang Wenqing stated that periodontal disease is caused by not thoroughly cleaning the teeth, leading to infections between the teeth and gums, and even in the soft tissues, thus forming a source of infection within the body. The bacteria and toxins from periodontal disease can travel through the blood vessels and circulate throughout the body, causing various diseases.

Dr. Yang Wenqing said: "If dentists and other specialists can collaborate to allow patients to receive early diagnosis and treatment for periodontal disease, it is believed that it would also help in controlling other diseases. Unfortunately, locally, many patients, and even doctors, are not aware of the severity of periodontal disease."
