As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, the New Taipei City Health Bureau conducted inspections on 51 commercially available rice dumplings and alkaline rice dumplings in May, all of which met the standards. Additionally, 65 samples of rice dumpling ingredients were tested, including 40 samples of dried radish, 15 samples of dried shrimp, and 10 samples of bamboo leaves. The results showed that 22 samples of dried radish contained benzoic acid, with a non-compliance rate of 55%. One sample even exceeded the standard limit by four times. However, the dried shrimp and bamboo leaves met the regulations.
The New Taipei City Health Bureau further explained that the inspections targeted hypermarkets, supermarkets, and traditional vendors, focusing on the hygiene standards of rice dumplings, borax in alkaline rice dumplings, formaldehyde and preservatives in dried radish, and bleaching agents in dried shrimp and bamboo leaves. Non-compliant products were immediately ordered to be removed from shelves, and follow-up inspections will be conducted. If violations are found again, the sellers will face fines ranging from NT$60,000 to NT$1.5 million under Articles 36 and 58 of the Consumer Protection Act.
The Health Bureau’s investigation revealed that 21 of the non-compliant dried radish samples were supplied by manufacturers in Chiayi County. Among them, six were provided by "Quanli Agricultural Products" (No. 222-7, Zhenliao Village, Budai Township, Chiayi County), nine by "Quanyi Food Factory" (No. 25, Jianlong Village, Budai Township, Chiayi County), four by "Haishanxing Food Factory" (No. 41, Neitian, Jianlong Village, Budai Township, Chiayi County), one by "Yuanquan Food Processing" (No. 222, Zhenliao Village, Budai Township, Chiayi County), and one by "Tongzhen Agricultural Products" (No. 25-2, Neitian, Jianlong Village, Budai Township, Chiayi County). One local vendor failed to provide the source of their supply. The Health Bureau has ordered the businesses to recall all products from the same batch immediately. If violations are confirmed, fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 will be imposed under Article 12 of the Food Sanitation Management Act.
Lin Guanzhen, head of the Food and Drug Administration Division of the Health Bureau, pointed out that manufacturers often add preservatives to food to prevent spoilage and extend shelf life. However, excessive consumption of sorbic acid may irritate the gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms such as stomach pain. Long-term intake of excessive benzoic acid can lead to loss of appetite and liver damage.(Photographed by Huang Xiuli) 2013/06/07
