The weather is scorching hot these days, and whether you're staying indoors with the air conditioning or engaging in outdoor activities, you probably crave a refreshing drink to cool down. However, the market is flooded with a dazzling array of hand-shaken or packaged beverages, and it’s easy to consume excessive calories without realizing it. Don’t be fooled by labels claiming "low calories" and gulp them down carelessly.

Although vendors customize drinks to suit customers' sweetness preferences—such as "half sugar," "less sugar," or "light sugar"—don’t underestimate their sugar content. With the advancement of food technology, high-fructose corn syrup has replaced natural fructose. Derived from corn and processed with enzymes to convert into corn sugar (a glucose precipitate), it is widely used by beverage and food manufacturers due to its low cost and easy blending with other ingredients.

**Frequency of Beverage Consumption Among Taiwanese Has Doubled Compared to 10 Years Ago**

Excessive intake of sugary drinks not only leads to obesity but can also cause elevated triglycerides, fatty liver, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, dementia, and even cancer. According to the National Nutrition and Health Survey, the frequency of sugary drink consumption among Taiwanese has doubled compared to a decade ago—a trend that demands serious attention.

Huang Hui-ling, a dietitian at Tainan Hospital under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, points out that many people mistakenly believe that ordering "light sugar" drinks means consuming less sugar. In an experiment, a common "half sugar" beverage was tested with a refractometer, revealing a sugar content equivalent to 10 sugar cubes. Stacking these cubes next to the drink creates a striking visual impact!

Dietitian Huang Hui-ling advises that it’s best to minimize sugary drink consumption, especially acidic beverages, which often contain even more sugar to mask their sourness. The harmful effects of excessive sugar intake have been scientifically proven. Replacing store-bought drinks with water or unsweetened tea is the best way to avoid obesity risks.
