Salt plays an indispensable role in daily life, whether in cooking or food processing. But did you know? Consuming too much salt can harm your health. Many studies have shown that high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, stroke, and even stomach cancer are linked to excessive salt intake.
Recently, a study by Harvard University and Tufts University pointed out that 1.65 million people die from heart disease each year, primarily due to excessive salt consumption. The study examined 205 salt intake surveys across 66 countries and found that 1.65 million deaths annually are caused by excessive salt intake, with cardiovascular diseases accounting for 10% of these deaths.
**Daily Salt Intake Should Not Exceed 2 Grams**
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that daily salt intake should not exceed 2 grams. However, according to 2010 global averages, people consume about 3.95 grams per day. Moreover, modern diets favor strong flavors, and many seemingly non-salty foods, such as cereal and cornflakes, also contain added salt, making it easy to exceed the recommended intake.
Experts suggest that to maintain good health, it is best to avoid processed foods, as nearly half of the daily salt intake for most people comes from bread, sandwiches, snacks, and cheese.
