Be cautious of drug interactions when consuming pomelos. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Ministry of Health and Welfare reminds the public that eating pomelos or grapefruits while taking certain medications, such as blood pressure-lowering drugs, cholesterol-lowering drugs, anti-arrhythmia medications, or immunosuppressants, may lead to adverse drug reactions. It is recommended that those on medication limit their intake to a few slices for festive enjoyment and avoid consuming large quantities.
The FDA explains that pomelos and grapefruits are rich in "furanocoumarins," which irreversibly inhibit the metabolic enzyme CYP450 3A4 in the intestines and liver. Since many drugs are metabolized by this enzyme, this inhibition can increase drug concentrations in the blood, raising the risk of adverse reactions. The effect of inhibiting drug metabolism can last for several hours or even two to three days, making it impossible to completely avoid interactions even if medication is taken at a different time.
The FDA advises that individuals on medication should try to avoid consuming these fruits or limit their intake to small amounts. Before eating, they should carefully read drug labels or consult a pharmacist to confirm any potential drug interaction risks. If unusual symptoms occur while taking medication, they should seek medical attention immediately.
