Pope Benedict XVI today condemned humanity's squandering of Earth's resources to satisfy insatiable desires. This is one of the strongest messages the Pope has issued on environmental issues.

The Pope told 150,000 believers gathered in Sydney for the World Youth Day celebrations that during his long journey from the Vatican to Sydney, he was amazed by the wonderful scenery he saw from the plane, and a deep sense of awe arose within him.

The 81-year-old Pope told young believers that it is easier to detect the problems of the Earth from the sky.

He said: "Perhaps inevitably, we are beginning to recognize some scars on our surface—erosion, deforestation, and the squandering of the world's mineral and marine resources to fuel insatiable human consumption."

He said: "Some of you come from island nations whose survival is threatened by rising sea levels, and some from countries suffering from severe drought."

The Pope said: "God's wonderful creation sometimes seems almost hostile and even dangerous to the humans who manage it. How can something 'good' appear so threatening?"

The spiritual leader of the world's 1.1 billion Catholics also listed environmental care and sustainable development alongside non-violence, justice, and peace as major human concerns.

Recalling the joy of looking out the window on his flight to Australia, he said it was like catching a glimpse of the creation story in the Bible's "Genesis."
