The head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Diouf, said today during his visit to Cuba that the production of biofuels has reduced the global supply of grains by 100 million tons that could have been used to feed the hungry.

In a speech at the University of Havana, Diouf pointed out that rising oil prices and trade barriers have led farmers to compete in growing more profitable crops for biofuels rather than food.

He said, "As a result, nearly 100 million tons of grains have been diverted from the food market to meet energy needs."

Diouf is currently studying Cuba's approach to the global food crisis. He mentioned that the production of corn and wheat has been particularly severely affected.
