A study from Princeton University shows that after men view images of scantily clad attractive women, the area of the brain responsible for operating tools becomes activated, while the area responsible for showing empathy towards others becomes dulled. This indicates that images of beautiful women only make men less likely to "see women as people," that is, to objectify women.
Susan Fiske, who led the study, stated that they asked male university students to undergo MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans, showing them photos of men and women dressed neatly, as well as photos of men and women dressed scantily, and recorded brain activity.
When viewing images of bikini-clad attractive women, men's premotor cortex, the area responsible for operating tools like wrenches and screwdrivers, becomes activated.
At the same time, men's prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for emotions and the ability to feel others' emotions and desires, becomes dulled. Additionally, researchers asked male students to fill out questionnaires about how sexist they felt they were; the results showed that the more sexist individuals had less active prefrontal cortex and other emotion-related areas.
Fiske stated that the implication of these results is that when men are stimulated by sexy photos, "they immediately want to 'use' these bodies." And the way sexists treat women is "as if they are not complete people."
Fiske's suggestion is that if revealing photos of attractive women appear in the workplace, it's hard to expect men not to have similar thoughts when treating female colleagues, and the effect will eventually extend from the photos to the workplace.
