Scientists studying brain function have discovered that putting emotions into words can help the brain relax.

Matthew Lieberman, an associate professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), pointed out at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting in Chicago on the 14th that expressing emotions through words activates the brain's self-control regions related to emotions, thereby reducing sadness.

Lieberman's research method involved asking subjects to lie inside an MRI machine and view images that evoke emotions, such as frightened or angry expressions. After seeing the expressions, the subjects pressed a button to select the word corresponding to the expression.

During the process, researchers noticed that when subjects put their emotions into words in this way, the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex became more active. This area of the brain is responsible for suppressing negative emotions.

At the same time, researchers also observed a decrease in activity in the amygdala, which is responsible for processing emotions such as fear, anger, and aggressive thoughts.

Lieberman suggested that this finding might explain why many young people pick up a pen and paper to express their emotions when they are filled with anxiety. Central News Agency (Translation)
