Salvia miltiorrhiza is a herbaceous plant of the Lamiaceae family. In Taiwan, approximately NT$6 million was imported in 2007 for use in chronic cardiovascular diseases, making it the most widely used single-ingredient herbal medicine in traditional Chinese medicine hospitals. Taiwan has successfully researched and developed cultivation techniques for Salvia miltiorrhiza, indicating significant future potential.

The Agricultural Research Institute has completed mass-production cultivation techniques for Salvia miltiorrhiza. Based on current cultivation conditions, the most suitable planting locations are areas with deep humus-rich soil, while clayey soils are not ideal for widespread cultivation. Taiwan's climate is rainy and humid, which promotes vigorous growth of the plant's lateral roots. The active components in these roots are not inferior to those found in commercially available Salvia miltiorrhiza tablets. Therefore, cultivating Salvia miltiorrhiza in Taiwan, combined with the development of high-value end products, holds great potential.

Traditionally, the root of Salvia miltiorrhiza is the primary medicinal part. Nowadays, its leaves can also be used to extract salvianolic acid. According to cultivation results from the Agricultural Research Institute, the roots are best harvested in late January. Roots harvested in autumn and winter contain higher levels of tanshinone IIA compared to those harvested in summer.

The leaves of Salvia miltiorrhiza are rich in water-soluble salvianolic acid, which migrates within the plant depending on the season. Harvesting must be done at the appropriate time, followed by extraction using suitable solvents. The extract is then concentrated under reduced pressure and further purified through multi-stage extraction with different solvents and preparative liquid chromatography. This process yields salvianolic acid B with a purity of up to 98%. Salvianolic acid B is widely used in both traditional Chinese and Western medicine for cardiovascular diseases, with a high per-milligram price (over NT$105), making it a high-value pure medicinal substance. Roots and leaves harvested after 18 months of cultivation in Taiwan yield tanshinone and salvianolic acid at levels higher than those found in standard commercial products.
