The Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Jacques Diouf, warned today that due to insufficient food production, one billion people worldwide will face famine this year.

According to a BBC report, Diouf held talks in Paris, France, to discuss the impact of the financial and economic crisis on developing countries. During the meeting, he called for increased agricultural investment and support for farmers' incomes.

Diouf stated that the number of people suffering from hunger globally is now higher than ever before. He said that in 2009, due to the financial and economic crisis, the FAO expects an additional 104 million people to suffer from hunger, bringing the total number of hungry people worldwide to one billion. He also noted that he has never seen such a large number of hungry people in the world before.

The FAO attributes the lack of decline in food prices in developing countries to market price rigidity. The organization is calling for a significant increase in foreign aid for agriculture.
